a long distance marriage

We’ve made it halfway.  Ironically, we thought our days of separation were over when Nick left the Marine Corps.  Life happens, though, and he was offered a seasonal position at Point Reyes National Seashore with the National Park Service.  After enduring another Minnesota winter, though mild, it’s hard to resist a summer on the coast.

It was too good to pass up, so in May we packed up the car and headed west.

After three years of small-town, southern Minnesotan restaurants, this place is unbelievable.  Fish tacos on the beach have become a favorite.

This little guy joined us for lunch on my last visit.

We’re about halfway through right now, and I’m slowly realizing that I don’t think I’ll even have enough time to explore San Francisco properly.  I’m only three months into my year at work, and I’ve almost used up my entire two weeks leave.  I think I need to find employment with more vacation time…

a slow end of spring

There hasn’t been much productivity outside of work lately, now that I’m back to solo living.  You don’t realize how much someone does around the house until he or she is gone. I was able to finish two more pillow covers before my trip to see Nick.  I put together two more linen covers with antique doilies.  This time, I went with blue, as they’re for my mom, and blue is her favorite.

a two year project

I have a habit of imagining that I have more free time than I do.  I only work 45ish hours a week.  No kids.  One dog.  I should have loads of extra time.  But outside of work, my time management skills leave a lot to be desired. And so for two years, I’ve been trying to get myself to make new cushions for an old thrifted chair.

I finally did it.

The best tutorial that I could find on sewing box cushions was this one on Sew Mama Sew: Summer Sewing — Perfectly Portable Cushion. I ended up using black linen, since I had some extra laying around.

Happy Valentine’s Day

Heart-shaped pancakes with bacon arrows.  By far the best Valentine’s Day meal I’ve ever had.  Nick gave me my favorite food…and he got a pillow (embroidered with some Johnny Cash lyrics).  He got the short end of the stick with this holiday.

Instead of cleaning or going into work (as I should have done), I felt that making another pillow cover somehow made up for these other lapses.  And after I finished, I realized that I don’t even have a pillow that fits this new cover.  Oh well.  (This one is made from linen and a vintage material purchased from Sticks and Stones).
